Philippians 4:11 “Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content.”

The word “content” used by Paul is perhaps somewhat misleading. While it most certainly means that Paul was accepting of his ‘less than ideal’ circumstances it goes much deeper. The word in Greek translated “content” is the word ‘autarkes’ which most Greek scholars agree literally means ‘strong enough or possessing enough self-sufficiency as to need no aid or support.’ Basically, Paul was saying, I have Christ in me, what need have I of anything else? Why should circumstances sway me? Contentment lies not in your circumstances, nor in convincing your mind that you really don’t mind all the pain and suffering, but rather in the recognition and acknowledgement that all you really need you have within you…Christ! If you had nothing left in life but God, you would find that God is enough. Phil 4:13 says I can do all things “thru” Christ who strengthens me. I can be thankful, joyful, and grateful, despite circumstances (content) because the Spirit of our risen Lord resides in me! If he is truly all we need, then why do we look at a shortage of material things as being in lack? Our true abundance lies in Him. O give him thanks and praise!

Pray: Gracious Father, your Holy Spirit has made me self sufficient in every circumstance. It is only my old nature that sees lack when in you I truly have abundance. Thank you for teaching me to recognize this contentment here on earth amid so many who are miserable and wanting more. You are enough for me, Father. For my salvation, for your blessings, and for your strength, in Jesus name I give you thanks – Amen
