Luke 6:46 “Why do you call me 'Lord, Lord,' and not do what I tell you?"
Jesus, on occasion, stepped out of his normal teaching pattern of using parables to explain difficult concepts and simply, well, said things simply. Why do you call me “Lord” and then you don’t do what I tell you to do? Do you not understand what a ‘lord’ is? Do you think I don’t recognize “lip service” when I see it? The only person you are kidding is yourself when you call your Savior “Lord” and then allow your will time and again to challenge his. There is no challenge. A lord has no need of convincing his servants “why” they should do what he says; he is not required to provide an explanation. A lord does not offer options: he offers the opportunity to show obedience. If you find your will constantly coming into conflict with the will of God, you don’t need to ask yourself which option seems better or appears easier. You don’t even need to take time evaluating the pros and cons of each. The only question…the ONLY question you need to ask yourself is this: “Is Christ truly the Lord of my life?” He either is or he isn’t. There is no half-way. If he is, there is no option – there is only obedience.
Pray: “Lord Jesus, for a long time I did not realize the implications of bending my knee and calling you Lord. My old ways still, like our adversary, keep rising up to challenge what you would have me to do. Arriving at the right answer isn’t difficult…you are my Lord. Changing my way of thinking is the real challenge. I need your help with that. You are not a cruel master or a slave-driver. You are a loving Lord who not only wants what is best for me – but knows what is best for me. As I remember that, my own will can be surrendered to yours, even as yours was to the Father. Today again I bow to your lordship…commend me to the Father in your holy name I pray – Amen.”
