Exodus 3:11 “But Moses said to God, ‘Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the children of Israel out of Egypt?’.”

What is it that defines you? Is it your past? Friends? Choices you’ve made? Words? If we allow anything but the word of God to define who we are, we will always be less than we were created to be. Moses was called by God to fulfill a 400 year old promise…what an honor! But Moses had a past. He was raised by Pharoah’s daughter (not his own mother). As a young man he murdered an Egyptian (to defend the Hebrews) who then turned around and said: ‘Who do you think you are to act as ruler and judge over us?’ when he tried to break up a fight between two of them. Moses had serious self-image issues. Serious enough that he fled and decided herding sheep in the desert was the life for him. So how did Moses respond to God? The same way we would, if we didn’t see ourselves as the “fearfully and wonderfully made” creations that we are (Psa. 139:14) – he said “Who am I?” God is always at work in the lives of his children and he needs us to accomplish things here on earth. But we never will - unless we are defined by our creator and not by something else.

Pray: Lord God, help me to remember that no matter what has happened in my life up to this point, I am not an accident or a mistake. I not only have value but I have a purpose. In your Psalm (139) you told me that I was carefully and thoughtfully put together and that you have known me from that day. Forgive me for letting others or the world define who I am. Today, help me to see myself as you do, so that I can step out boldly and with confidence to perform whatever it is you have for me to do. In Jesus’ holy name I pray - Amen.”
