Psalm 23:5a “You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies…”

John 14:2-3 “In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.”
David knew that the tablelands, the mesas in the higher elevations where the summer pastures were located, were green and fertile. He also knew that the land itself posed certain threats and dangers (enemies) for the sheep. Poisoness weeds, venomous animals and deeply rutted areas posed threats to the sheep’s safety. The shepherd, while the sheep were still safe in the fold at home, would travel to these pastures and prepare them before bringing the sheep. He would locate areas to avoid and dispose of other dangers himself. He made sure all would be ready and perfect when his beloved flock arrived. Whatever season of life you find yourself in, whether you are enjoying the green of summer, the sometimes uncertain transitioning of fall, the hard, lean times of winter or the renewing of spring, know that your shepherd has prepared the place he is taking you. He has left nothing to chance. Even as we prepare our homes when expecting guests, so too our beloved shepherd has prepared a place for us. He leaves nothing to chance. His lands are a green place where quiet waters run, a place of peace, serenity and safety. He has prepared it for you.

Pray: “Lord Jesus, you have told me that you are the Way. I understand now that you are the ‘way’ to my home, my green pastures…the place you have prepared especially for me. As I pass through the different seasons of my life on my way to your green pastures, I look forward with great anticipation because no matter how difficult my journey, I have your promise that the place to which you are leading me will be a joy to me forever. That place where the Great Shepherd himself waits for us. Lead me in your way, Lord - Amen”
