I Samuel13:14 “…The Lord has sought out a man after his own heart, and the Lord has commanded him to be prince over his people…”
King David. Described by the prophet Samuel as a man after God’s own heart, was, in addition to being a man of valor and mighty warrior, an accomplished musician. It was the young David who played his lyre when an evil spirit troubled King Saul and soothed away his anxieties. It was David, the man who penned over 4000 songs including over half the book of Psalms, we need to understand in order to understand the “heart” of God. There is ample proof that David was no more or less human than you or I. Far from perfect, some of his mistakes are known the world over. King David, committed adultery with the wife of one of his soldiers and then, to cover the deed, had the husband killed in battle. David took the sacred shew bread (intended only for the priests) and gave it to his army when they were hungry. So in what way was David a man after God’s own heart? David knew he was simply a fallible man, dependent on God for all he needed to live and reign over God’s chosen people. In happiness, sadness, repentance, trouble, in plenty and lack, David always went to the Father with a worshipful heart.
Pray: Lord, help me to be like David, running to you in good times with thanksgiving and in times of trouble, knowing (as he did) that you are my rock and my refuge. No matter what I am feeling today, remind me that I can speak to you from the openness and honesty of my heart because that is what you want from me. In Jesus’ name I pray - Amen.”
