Exodus 3:13-14 “But Moses protested, “If I go to the people of Israel and tell them, ‘The God of your ancestors has sent me to you,’ they will ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what should I tell them?” God replied to Moses, “I Am Who I Am. Say this to the people of Israel: I Am has sent me to you!”

Moses found himself face to bush with the creator of the universe. His heart for many years had pondered why the God of his forefathers (Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob) had failed to hear the cry of his children in the bondage of Egypt. Now this very same God was telling Moses it was time…and that Moses would be God’s instrument of deliverance. Moses knew it would not be easy to convince the children of Israel, over whom he had once walked as a prince of Egypt, that he was in fact the chosen one sent by their God. He anticipated the problems, including who to say had sent him. God’s answer is one of great simplicity and yet incredible breath. Names were important to the people of God. His name, therefore, had to be all that he is. That is no easy task since our God is all powerful, ever-present, all knowing, and so Holy that he cannot even be looked upon. By telling Moses to identify Him as “I AM”, God was, in two simple words, summing up all that is great, eternal, and amazing about himself. Add any adjective: powerful, mighty, love, holy, everywhere, eternal, here…and God is all of that and more!

Pray: Heavenly Father, you truly are all things to me. You have so many names in your Word and yet the name “I Am” says so much about you. Like so many other things you are to me, your name is a source of great comfort and strength to me. I realize now that whatever I need, whenever I need it, you ARE that thing. The end to every story, the answer to every question, and the response to every prayer. Praise be to you, great “I Am”, in your son’s precious name through which I give you glory – Amen
