Matthew 6:9-10 “Pray then like this: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.”
Jesus taught his disciples this prayer. Notice that after acknowledging God’s sovereignty and holiness, the first thing the prayer asks is that his kingdom come down to earth, just as it is in heaven. Jesus came to earth to tell us (and show us) what the kingdom of heaven is like. But our Lord and Savior has returned to his heavenly home, seated at God’s right hand and the prayer is asking for the kingdom to come (present tense)…now! How then, will God accomplish this goal of establishing his kingdom here on earth (where his children, you and I, will be kings and priests)? It will only happen to the extent that he is able to use us. The more committed we are to seeing his kingdom come down, the sooner and more completely we will see it happen. Asking God to bring his kingdom down then, is asking, in effect, to use us to make it happen. We are expressing our willingness to be a part in supplanting the kingdom of the enemy here on earth with a kingdom of peace and light, of joy and love. A kingdom in which you and I are royalty because our brother, Jesus, is King!
Prayer: Heavenly Father, I am ready to help you bring your kingdom down here. I realize you will have to use me to make this happen. Lead me in the way you would have me go, help me to prepare the way. Let me share with the whole world the good news that tyranny has ended and freedom in Christ is available to all. Thank you, Lord, for counting me worthy - In Jesus’ strength I thank you - Amen.”
