Colossians 3:23-24 “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.”
In the ancient feudal system of lords and vassals, everything the vassals, or servants, did they did for their lord. They didn’t do it to ‘get ahead,’ they didn’t do it to impress others. All the efforts, all their blood, sweat and tears were for the benefit of their lord. If he was a good lord, then he made sure that the vassals had all they needed to be fed and secure. Today, much of what we do, if you examine it carefully, is driven by selfish motives. It is either to satisfy a desire or want, it feeds our ego, or it serves in some way to advance us in our own eyes and the eyes of others. As servants of the Lord, by our own choice, we reflect our Master in all that we do. People are not interested in rewarding you – they are interested in getting rewards themselves. Our Lord Jesus, however, has all the blessings of heaven with which to bless those who serve him with a whole heart. We love him because he first loved us enough to pay the price for our sins. We serve him because we desire to please the ones we love, not because he rewards us.
Pray: “Father God, it is easy for me to offer up those things that are easy. Help me, I pray, when I am challenged in my day to day life, to offer up those things that are difficult to you. Whenever I ‘overcome’, it is a gift worth offering my Lord. Let all I do be to please him…my brother, my Lord, my everything. In Jesus name I ask it – Amen.”
