Matthew 5:14-16 ”You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”
When Jesus was in the world, he himself was the light of the world. When he returned to the Father, that light, the Holy Spirit, was sent to live in us that the world might not be without light. Our influence into the lives of others dispels darkness. Just as the light of knowledge dispels ignorance, so too the wondrous light of the gospel distinguishes truth from error. Actions will influence others long before words have a chance to. Others must see the things that we do, and see them consistently, before they will be willing to listen to the truth that we hold within us. Even something as simple as a smile. Have you ever tried not to smile at someone who smiles at you? It’s almost impossible. It has an immediate influence on our mood! Ever try to be angry while singing and praising God? You can’t! The simple act of worship has an immediate influence on our frame of mind. Who among us would not relieve a child’s fear of the dark if we held a night-light in our hands? Then how can we not free the world from darkness when we possess the only light that can do so?
Pray: “Lord God, in your infinite wisdom you have entrusted the light that your son brought into this world to me. Teach me to be a beacon in my community, a light to my friends and family, and a comfort to those still living in darkness who I come in contact with every day. Make me transparent, Lord, that your light may reach every place you lead me. In Jesus name I pray - Amen”
