Matthew 7:24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.”

For three years Jesus traveled around teaching in synagogues, on mountaintops, in Gentile cities and in Jewish households. He taught the poor, he taught the wealthy, he taught sinners without faith and he taught religious leaders with false faith. Lots of people ‘heard’ the words that Jesus spoke. And yet only those who were prepared to put his words into action could be called ‘wise’. Words spoken and unheeded are words wasted. Only those who were prepared to act on Jesus’ teachings were worthy to be called ‘wise’ and only those willing to practice what Jesus preached had faith that was like the house built on the rock. Jesus’ teachings became that solid foundation because they had the backing of our Heavenly Father. It’s not that the teachings were difficult to understand…rather, the difficulty came in sacrificing what we believed and wanted for what he told us was ‘better’. What we want and what we think is best is constantly changing – about as stable as a house built on sand. Truth, like a rock, is immoveable and so there is no shifting or changing. It is a rock to our life precisely because it doesn’t change. What was true then, is still true today.

Pray: “Lord Jesus, only the truth is unchanging. What you taught in your day is just as applicable today. All the things that we try to build that are not in alignment with your teachings are as shifting and changing as societies standards. Many hear your words, Lord and still think their way is somehow superior. I realize that my ways are as unstable as sand in a storm. On you the rock, Lord Jesus, will I base my actions that they may be as true as your word – Amen.”
