Hebrews 12:1b “let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles...”
Do you so suppose the author of Hebrews was talking to just a select few people when he said that they were ‘easily entangled’ by sin? Why does it seem like sin so easily gets a hold of us? Why is it we find ourselves caught up in it time and time again? A few reasons come to mind. First, if you do not know what the Word of God teaches, it is easy to be deceived. Your enemy is not strong enough to battle you toe to toe since the spirit in you is greater than the spirit of this world. Therefore he resorts to subterfuge and guile, distracting you and weakening you through the pleasures of sin. Secondly, we are raised in a self-centered world. Selfishness is sin’s best friend. If we are concerned only with ourselves, it will not be hard for sin to entrap us. Finally, sin is everywhere. It saturates our society. The enemy has created a giant “gray area” so that people don’t even recognize sin when they see it. Being ‘spirit-minded’ vs ‘flesh-minded’ is the only defense against sin. Without a transformed mind, we are like flies in a forest of spider webs.
Pray: “Dearest Lord, sin abounds in this world. It is in the music we hear, the TV and movies we watch, and streaming on the internet. People don’t even recognize what is right and wrong because so much has become “ok” in our society. I want to live separated from all that is not of you. I want to see sin for what it is and reject it because I am more concerned with others than myself…with spiritual matters rather than fleshly matters. With your help, I will overcome sin, reject enticement, and keep my mind transformed – in my Savior’s matchless name I pray – Amen.”
