Philippians 1:13-14 “For everyone here, including the whole palace guard, knows that I am in chains because of Christ. And because of my imprisonment, most of the believers here have gained confidence and boldly speak God’s message without fear.”
Sitting in prison would give anyone plenty of time to feel sorry for themselves. The atmosphere is unpleasant, the food surely not much better, and the uncertainty as to if and when you will get out lingers. Interesting that under these circumstances Paul’s thoughts are focused not on the effect his circumstances are having on him but rather on the positive impact it is having on those believers in Philippi. Drawing strength and encouragement from Paul’s example, they boldly stepped out in proclaiming the Gospel! Paul’s mission was continuing even though he was not present to lead it. In fact, the fact that he says the ‘whole’ palace guard knows he is in chains for Christ indicates he had already been there for some time so that the guards duty rotation would have given each a chance to sit (and know doubt listen to Paul preach!) and guard this Christian ‘troublemaker’. Paul’s personal “net” was surely ripping. After all, chains are no fun. But Paul saw the ‘fish’ and took heart. When we take a stand, sometimes at great personal risk, it often inspires those who, without our example, might never have the courage to stand on their own.
Pray: “Father God, I have often found myself ‘trapped’ in circumstances and been so busy trying to get out that I failed to see what you might have been using my circumstances to do or work in the lives of others. I trust you, Lord. Unblind me to how my trials may be benefitting others. In Jesus holy name I pray – Amen.
