Psalms 25:9 “He leads the humble in what is right, and teaches the humble his way.”
Someone who is proud cannot be led because they either believe that they themselves should be leading or else they believe that they themselves know the way and therefore have no need of a guide. The proud cannot be taught because they either believe they already know the answers, or else prefer to trust in their own judgments and instincts to find the way. Either way, it is impossible to follow Christ and learn what he has to teach you if you are not of a humble heart and mind. Putting trust in worldly knowledge, worldly ways and even in experienced worldly people all keep us from recognizing our need for God. It is not until you the created come into contact with your Creator that you can possibly begin to comprehend your relationship to one another. You are limited. He is limitless. You are but a blip in the passage of time. He was before time – and will be when time is passed away. Your strength will fail. His power is eternal. To find what is truly right, to be taught how you are to serve your God, requires you first understand that you cannot do it without him. That is the beginning of humility.
Pray: “Dearest Father, I want to remain teachable, Lord, because I realize there is so much I still have to learn. Forgive my desire to constantly go my own way. My stubbornness and pride are little more than the signs of a willful and immature child. Teach me to submit, Father, and to understand that to bow my knee and acknowledge my need for you is the beginning of the journey that will take me to where I want to go. Lord Jesus, thank you for your example and for helping me to stay true and humble as you did. And thank you for bringing this prayer to our Father for me – Amen.”
