James1:22-25 “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do”
Many people today are deceived into thinking that simply knowing the Word is good enough. They sit dutifully in church every Sunday, say their “amens” and “hallelujahs” in all the appropriate places and leave feeling generally pretty good about themselves. And yet at soon as they leave out the doors (walk away from the mirror) they immediately forget their Christianity and begin living like the rest of the world. Only those who keep their eyes fixed on scripture (the perfect law) and continue to do what it says, not leaving it behind on the church bench, will receive the promised blessings. And what blessings are those? It says that what they do will be blessed. What area of life does that apply to? Any and all! You will be blessed in your job, blessed in your relationships, blessed in your family, blessed in whatever you set your hands to do. The principles in God’s word cannot fail. They work every time, in all situations. God backs up his entire Word so that we are not left to figure out what still applies today and what doesn’t. If we look intently, seriously, into the words of life, we will walk not only in freedom but in God’s promised favor!
Pray: “Dear Father, I did not accept the sacrifice of your son, my Lord and Savior so that I could merely sit in church on Sunday and listen to something that makes me feel good. I want to learn better each day to apply all that I have learned. Help me today, I pray, to find ways to not only remember but to use those things that I hear. Whether by devotionals, reading, or revelation from you, give me opportunity each day to live out the things I have learned...in my blessed Savior’s name I pray - Amen.”
