Isaiah 43:2 “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through the fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. ”

Humans oftentimes make promises - things they truly want to do and intend to do. Unfortunately, our best laid plans and intentions are often subject to circumstances and events beyond our control. The things that we intended become impossible to accomplish. God doesn’t exist, like we do, at the mercy of circumstances or events. In fact, God already sees the future and isn’t surprised by things the way we are. What’s more, unlike us, God does not obligate himself out of a sense of emotional need or duty. Simply put, God does not make promises lightly. He doesn’t need anything, nor does he owe anyone anything so when God makes a promise, we know two things: first, that it is solely for the benefit of the person to whom the promise is made, and second, that he is not only willing but able to follow through. God does not promise there will never be trouble, but like Daniel in the lions den or Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in the fiery furnace, God has promised to see you through. Circumstances, battles, trials can all leave a mark. But God promises to not let us be defeated, overwhelmed or consumed. Trust him.

Pray: “Lord God, I know you don’t owe me anything. You get nothing from promising me things. Without your promises, Lord, I would so often be without hope in this life. My trust in your faithful word is my hope, my anchor. You never told me life would be a ‘bed of roses’; but you did assure me that you would walk through trials with me. You never promised I would not be hurt or feel pain; but you did promise I would not be destroyed by it. In whom else can I trust but you? Thank you, Father, in the powerful name of my brother, Jesus, who suffered for me and to whom you gave the victory that we all share in - Amen.”
