Hebrews 2:7-8a “You made him for a little while lower than the angels; you have crowned him with glory and honor, putting everything in subjection under his feet.”
So great was God’s desire for his creation to know him that he willingly left his seat in the heavenlies to be born among us as a child (Matt 1:23). We could imagine an earthly king giving up his throne to live among the peasants. We see the loss of power and position but it doesn’t compare. Jesus had the power to create this world and all that is in it. He existed with the Father before we even were. This isn’t a case of “CEO becomes McDonald’s fry-cook”, this is the glory, majesty and limitless power of heaven stepping into a limited and vulnerable human body and walking about in a sometimes hostile and unstable society. All this he did so that we could know him personally; so we could hear directly from the Lord of heaven and see his great love and compassion for people. Like a parent teaches their children, Jesus came to teach us by walking the earth as a Jewish Rabbi, separating truth from error. The greater became the lesser for our sake, but now he has risen to glory and as the greater once again sits at the Father’s right hand, intervening for us and waiting for our joyous reunion.
Pray: “Lord Jesus, it is hard for me to fathom all that you gave up to become one of us. You subjected yourself to things you never should have had to experience just so that we could know you. You brought healing, words of life, and gave us a picture of how our lives should be lived. You laughed with us, wept with us, ate with us and taught us. You gave dignity to the downtrodden and deflated the egos of the puffed up. Through it all, you demonstrated your worthiness of our praise and our discipleship. Because you were willing to come down and be where we were then, we can be assured that you will continue now to be with us in every circumstance. Thank our Father from me for letting you come….Amen.”
